Kelley enters a completely mirrored room, as if sleepwalking, and witnesses a man cutting into a safe with a torch, a woman (Warren) standing over him. The man with the torch turns and attacks Kelley, who grabs an electric drill from the woman and drives this into the man's heart, killing him. The woman slips out a door while Kelley drags the body into a closet, slamming the door and locking it, clutching the key and a button from the man's suitcoat, then escapes through another mirrored door. The next morning Kelley awakens with the key and the button in his hand, convinced his terrible experience was real, not a nightmare. He goes to his friend Paul Kelly, a police detective, and explains what happened. Kelly does not believe his friend but humors him by saying he will look into the matter. Later, when Kelly and his wife (Doran), accompanied by Kelley and his girl friend (Scott), are driving through a storm, they take refuge in a mansion where the mirrored room is found. Its eccentric owner, Keane, gives them shelter. Kelly, after some investigation, comes to believe that his friend indeed has committed a murder but he delays arresting him until he gathers more evidence. Meanwhile, the rich Keane explains that his wife has been killed in an auto accident recently, and all attend the funeral. Kelley believes Keane has hypnotized him to produce the murderous dream and re-enters the mirrored room, where Keane does hypnotize him, compelling him to write a confession that says he killed Warren, although Keane himself did the awful deed. But Paul Kelly is wise to the scheme and has wired the mirrored room. Before Kelley can commit suicide, detective Kelly intervenes and pursues Keane, who crashes his own car and dies. The plot is complex and the clues to the real killer unfold slowly and cleverly. Shane directs his own script with a brisk pace and inventive setups. He later remade the film in 1956 as NIGHTMARE, but it lacked the verve and suspense of the original. leave a comment
