A gritty probe into the seedy nighttime world of sex clubs, starring Tom Berenger as Matt Rossi, a seemingly callous manager of topless dancers. When a couple of his girls are attacked and mutilated, he at first suspects rival talent agent Goldstein (Jan Murray) is behind the brutality. The real killer, however, is Pazzo (John Foster), a deranged martial arts expert who feels he's providing a worthwhile service by ridding the world of these "dirty" girls, and who chronicles his assaults in a notebook with "Fear City" scrawled in blood on the cover. Al Wheeler (Billy Dee Williams) is a tough homicide cop who doesn't much like Rossi or his mob pals, and who feels they are getting in the way of his investigation. As the attacks continue, Rossi sets out to get the killer while also trying to patch things up with his former girlfriend, stripper Loretta (Melanie Griffith), and doing battle with his past. Director Abel Ferrara (MS. 45) effectively captures the sleaziness of the milieu he depicts, yet, though the picture includes an abundance of nudity and violence, it avoids titillating in the manner usually associated with films of this ilk. Instead, he maintains a grim edge to it all, making this an effective, if sometimes slow moving, thriller. Williams is very good as the cynical but dedicated cop, the versatile Berenger does well with a somewhat under-written role, and Griffith shows some of the ability that would make her one of Hollywood's top actresses before the decade was over. leave a comment
