My Favorite Blonde: Review

Carroll is a beautiful spy who posesses plans involving the shipment of war planes to England and is being chased by Nazis who want the plans for themselves. While in New York, she escapes from them by ducking into a small dressing room at a theater. Coincidentally this is the dressing room of Hope, a wisecracking ladies' man who's preparing his performing penguin for its debut. Without much pleading, the lovely Carroll convinces Hope to aid her escape. From there it's a comic cross-country chase with lots of disguises and silliness. Hope is wonderful, with something smart to say no matter what the situation. His smug behavior is very funny (far and away superior to anything he ever did in the television work that made him rich) and the pacing is as good as it usually is in these Hope comedies. His old partner from the ROAD films, the wonderfully laid back Bing Crosby, makes a cameo (as he so often did in Hope's solo comedies) as a man giving the two travelers directions. "No, it can't be," mutters Hope after the benefactor leaves. Some good fun, but the poor penguin is treated like a toy rather than an animal. Penguins are inherently funny animals (as television's "Monty Python's Flying Circus" proved time and again), and there was no need for the knockabout treatment of the bird. leave a comment
