Graphic-novel buffs may enjoy this titillating, big-screen version of the adult comic book by David Quinn and Tim Vigil, but others will be put off by its insistence that violence is some sort of alternative lifestyle. Devastated by the murder of his girlfriend, John Jasper (Mark Frost) contemplates a leap into oblivion. Attracted to John's despair, the demonic M (Andrew Divoff) and his vampy consort (Monica Van Campen) offer consolation for a small price: If John signs over his soul, M will empower him to avenge his beloved. John morphs into a winged creature, complete with Freddy Kreuger-esque razor fingers, and exacts his revenge. Then, instead of consigning him to hell, M forces John to become his personal hit man. After slicing up several diplomats at M's behest, John is apprehended by Lt. Margolies (Jeffrey Combs) and institutionalized at an asylum headed by another of M's minions, Dr. Yanamoto (Junix Inocian). M, who's prepping for Satan's resurrection, is furious when John starts responding to the music therapy of persistent Dr. Jade DeCamp (Isabel Brook), who doesn't believe a word of John's tall tale about transforming himself into a devilish assassin. She's drawn to him, though, and becomes his lover. Because the power of true love enables John to assert control over his transformation from human to dark angel, M kidnaps Jade and brainwashes her into decadence. Repelled by Jade's newly minted nastiness, John vows to block the Anti-Christ's rebirth and restore Jade's purity. Can John reclaim Jade without paving the way for Beelzebub's re-entry into the world and hastening his own destruction? Adult horror flick connoisseurs may enjoy the spectacle of a mortal babe and her cloven Casanova, but this gory paean to sado-masochism feels as though it were the product of a struggle between Clive Barker and Tim Burton to control an orgy orchestrated by Bob Flanagan (SICK). leave a comment --Robert Pardi
