FATHERS' DAY
starstarstarstar
First, the shocker: Once-nubile Nastassja Kinski has officially graduated to playing moms. Now, to business. Slick Jack Lawrence (Billy Crystal) is a type-A lawyer on his third marriage. Disheveled Dale Putley (Robin Williams) is a failed writer who's such a neurotic mess he can't even pull himself together to commit suicide. Collette (Kinski), the lover of both men in their salad days -- which sure sound like the freewheeling '60s, but, mathematics dictate, must have been the early '80s -- approaches them separately and tells each that he's the real father of her 16-year-old son Scott (Charlie Hofheimer), who's run away from home. The mismatched maybe-dads team up to find the troubled teen, wacky mayhem ensues, and everybody learns at least one lesson about the importance of family. This smug, formulaic comedy is nominally based on the French LES COMPERES, but it's really the Billy and Robin Show, and all considerations are secondary to their trademark comic shenanigans. How much you enjoy the film will depend entirely on how much you enjoy the spectacle of Williams spewing forth streams of nonsensical gibberish in an attempt to impersonate a German record producer, and Crystal pitching snit fits. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
