A disappointing satire that pokes at the Catholic Church without ever really puncturing it. Rey is a cardinal who returns to his hometown after 30 years to find his illegitimate daughter by a servant girl. The servant girl has long since married a shepherd; the daughter, Abril, has become
a prostitute, who in turn has also borne a daughter out of wedlock. This granddaughter lives with Rey's Marxist doctor brother, Rabal, whose main entertainment in life is insulting the church and his brother. Rey tries to convince Abril to marry Rabal, offering her a large inheritance. The
