A cheerfully irrelevant movie about the petty problems of wealthy white folks who don't have any real ones, this is a loose remake of Vincente Minelli's innocuous Spencer Tracy vehicle, FATHER'S LITTLE DIVIDEND (1951). Attempting to fill Tracy's cruel shoes is Steve Martin, who manfully muddles through the simultaneous pregnancies of his newly married daughter (Kimberly Williams) and middle-aged wife (Diane Keaton). Lots of Angst Lite about aging and a few genuinely funny bits -- some genial, some based on rather disturbing racial and sexual stereotypes -- keep things moving along at an engaging pace. In all, it's fairly harmless, tolerably sentimental and mildly entertaining: just the thing for the kind of holiday afternoon when you've had way too much of your relatives. leave a comment
