Ellis is brought in by New York police on suspicion of murder on the night of her operatic debut. The trauma of the interrogation causes laryngitis. In disgrace, she goes to South America, where she is courted by Foster and Mowbray. When Mowbray is killed while he and Ellis sing, she is again under suspicion.
