What road hogs are to highways, Jake Busey is to acting, and make no mistake — it's not easy to steal scenes from co-stars are like Crispin Glover and Jennifer Tilly. Hard-drinking Rick Jeffers (Busey) is a rolling stone, despite the devotion of his patient girlfriend, Tamara (Natasha Lyonne). While she toils in a dead-end waitressing job, Rick lives up to his reputation as a party animal — one night he's even lucky enough to bed porn star Ginger Quail (Tilly), who's off-screen talents more than live up to her onscreen reputation. Flaky Rick decides to hit the open road after his apartment is robbed, and Tamara doesn't stand in his way. Unable to forget Ginger, Rick decides to hook up with her in Palm Springs. Buzzing along in his usual altered state, Rick is in no mood to aid a doofus named Jules (Glover), the victim of a recent robbery victim. But Jules begs Rick for a lift and, uncharacteristically, the selfish Rick obliges. After adopting Jules as a driving companion and sounding board for his anything-goes philosophy, Rick tries to broaden the circumspect Jules' horizons. Rick enjoys a quickie with a teenaged bowling alley bimbo and gets beaten up by the girl's angry brother; Rick in turn blows up his assailant's truck. Unaccustomed to such excitement, Jules forgets about returning home and accompanies Rick to Palm Springs. Unfortunately, Ginger's spouse/manager/pimp, Robinson (Eric Roberts), doesn't believe in freebies and Rick's relentless pursuit of the X-rated hottie drives Robinson the beat the hell out of him. Will Jules adopt Rick's reckless lifestyle or will Rick turn over a new leaf and emulate Jules' compassionate nature? Apparently meant to be a sort of priapic Zorba the Greek, Busey comes across as a blowhard rather than a life force in this asinine road movie. His soul-searching seems hollow and the mannerisms of the over-emoting stars sweep away any semblance of reality. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
