Gabriel Kaplan (TV's "Welcome Back Kotter") plays a New York City delicatessen worker who finagles a job as the head basketball coach of Nevada's Cadwalader College. To ensure his success, he recruits a talented assemblage of Gotham playground players whose scholastic qualifications are highly suspect. One of them (Washington) is actually a woman who goes to great pains to keep her gender a secret, but before long she and another of the players have fallen in love. In the meantime, the Cadwalader cagers demolish their small-time opposition and land a Big Game with the state's basketball powerhouse (just another of those midseason schedule additions that happen all the time). Totally implausible (though surely not meant to be taken seriously), highly predictable, and not particularly funny, FAST BREAK may be worth the attention of basketball fans interested in watching University of Tennessee and NBA standout Bernard King act. Michael Warren, who starred in the backcourt at UCLA when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then Lew Alcindor) was a Bruin and who would go on to become a featured performer on TV's "Hill Street Blues," also has a part as one of Kaplan's players. leave a comment
