1953, Movie, NR, 80 mins

The remakers of the 1935 film, starring Henry Fonda and Janet Gaynor, made a critical mistake in turning the story into a musical. Grable plays the role of the boat cook who falls in love with a struggling farmer, Robertson. Set in the 1850s, the musical has numbers lacking luster and the acting is worse. Songs include: "We're in Business," "On the Erie Canal," "We're Doing It for the Natives in Jamaica," "When I Close my Door," "Today I Love Everybody," "Somethin' Real Special," "With the Sun Warm upon Me," and "Can You Spell Schenectady?" (Harold Arlen, Dorothy Fields). leave a comment
