Far From The Madding Crowd

1967, Movie, NR, 168 mins

Director Schlesinger makes the best of a script that adheres to Thomas Hardy's novel almost page for page. Set in 1874, Bathsheba Everdene (Christie) is in love with (and feels superior to) three men, Sergeant Troy (Stamp), William Boldwood (Finch), and Gabriel Oak (Bates). Who will she choose?

This is a predictable story that Schlesinger struggles to keep fresh and moving. The actors have a difficult time with the flat characters but, at times, are able to breath life into them. Nicolas Roeg's cinematography is stunning.
