This version contains the final story in Pagnol's Marseilles trilogy, following MARIUS and FANNY. In the original French version, the story ends as Marius goes back to sea, leaving Fanny with Panisse, her husband, and the son that Marius fathered, now acknowledged as Panisse's. This remake goes over the same territory earlier indicated, then continues beyond it. Nine years pass, and Marius (Horst Buchholz) is working as a garageman in a nearby town, having given up his passion for the sea and the need to sail to the "isles beneath the wind." The aged Panisse is played by Chevalier and the grandfather by Boyer. A pal takes the child (Flateau), now nine, to visit Buchholz, who is overcome by the sight of the boy. As this happens, Caron arrives and tells her long-lost love that Chevalier is dying and has stated from his deathbed that it is his sincere desire for Buchholz and Caron to marry as soon as they can after his death. Thus blessed, the lovers unite and the picture concludes. This version is essentially the same as the Joshua Logan/Harold Rome musical, with the songs omitted. Why the lovely score has been deleted is a mystery, as it contained some of Rome's best music. In fact, Harry Sukman used that music as the basis for his film score, and he received an adaptation credit rather than the usual "music by." FANNY received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture (won by WEST SIDE STORY), Boyer for Best Actor (Maximilian Schell took this one for JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBURG), Best Cinematography, Best Score, and Best Film Editing. leave a comment
