An American president and his family seem a likely satirical target for the acerbic wit of Buck Henry--scripter of CATCH-22, coscripter of THE GRADUATE--yet Henry's directorial debut is a resounding failure. Bob Newhart is President Manfred Link, and Gilda Radner is Gloria, the First Daughter. When Gloria is kidnaped in Africa by a tribe bent on sacrificing her, Daddy comes up with an offer the tribesmen can't refuse. Filled with illogical situations and juvenile humor, FIRST FAMILY will have trouble getting anybody's vote. leave a comment
