FAMILY BUSINESS tells the story of the McMullen clan, a New York family consisting of Jessie (Sean Connery), a 65-year-old thief with a vibrant personality and devious ideas; his son Vito (Dustin Hoffman), a onetime crook who now runs a meat-packing business; and Vito's son Adam (Matthew Broderick), a Westinghouse scholar with a bright future. Adam and his grandfather approach Vito with a very lucrative plan to steal test tubes full of experimental gene-splicing plasmas that will revolutionize science. Vito wants his son to live free of crime, but he reluctantly agrees to participate. They prepare carefully for the job, but in the course of retrieving some forgotten documents, Adam trips an alarm, bringing the police. Vito implicates himself and his father in order to save Adam, and the remainder fo the film deals with the recriminations and reconciliations among the three generations of the family. FAMILY BUSINESS has all the makings of a good film: the cast is exceptional, director Sidney Lumet is a Hollywood favorite, and the screenplay is by acclaimed author Vincent Patrick (The Pope of Greenwich Village). Unfortunately, FAMILY BUSINESS is a totally confused picture. Written like a caper film, directed like a comedy (the awful score is probably the funniest thing about the film), and acted like a drama, it simply never gels. If viewers are not totally uninterested, they will probably be offended by the film's unnecessary ethnic jokes. leave a comment
