Writer Don J. Snyder and director Michael Switzer lay on the sentimentality with a trowel in this syrupy TV movie whose competent actors gets stuck in the treacle. As a child in Maine, Terry McQuinn (Jake Brockman) resented the energy his handyman father lavished on the homes of upper class vacationers. Now a high-powered attorney in Los Angeles, Terry (Gary Sinise) has mixed feelings about attending his estranged father's funeral. The mournful journey back home not only summons up Terry's childhood of benign neglect but also revives memories of a childhood trauma. Years ago, during a winter outing organized by the wealthy Charles Wentworth (Rick Roberts), young Terry and Charles' four year-old daughter, Katherine (Ryan Simpkins), survived a car accident. Unfortunately, Charles' automobile ran over a mother and child stranded on the roadside. Though absolved by the subsequent inquest, Charles was so unhinged by the incident that he abandoned his family and privileged lifestyle; he didn't even object to his wife's lie to Katherine that her father died in the accident. Years later, divorcee Katherine (Joely Richardson) decides to reopen the family retreat and contacts Terry, who's staying at his late father's cabin. Terry quickly becomes attached to Katherine and her blind adopted daughter, Olivia (Jordy Benattar). Terry learns that Charles is not only alive but an advocate for the homeless who's devoted his life to good works, and decides to play guardian angel for Katherine. But Katherine has trouble accepting the resurrection of her long-lost father. This melodramatic exploration of second chances and the notion that you can go home again milks tears from homelessness, the loss of loved ones, the adoption of the physically challenged and manslaughter.
