An occasionally insightful tale of a group of Jewish children orphaned during WW II who have come to idolize Smith, the American who befriends them. When the picture concentrates on the children's conversations or captures their innocent gazes (the cast is made up mostly of
nonprofessionals), it is most successful. The melodramatic touch of having Smith battle the Arabs and save a water supply truck works less well. Though produced in Israel, the film is in English.
