FAIR GAME

Not bad enough to be good, and not good enough, thankfully, to launch supermodel Cindy Crawford on a movie career. This vigorous, pinheaded action flick asks us to accept Cindy as a lawyer -- a fabulous lawyer, mind you -- on the run from the Russian Mafia, currently the heavies of choice for every blocked screenwriter in Hollywood. The bad guys are very bad; the good guy (sensitive studmuffin Billy Baldwin) fills his Levi's splendidly; the heroine makes the best of a role that asks her to do little more than squeeze into and out of a series of insanely revealing schmattes. Bullets fly, things blow up (they blow up real good; it's a Joel Silver production, after all) and a passel of character actors get a chance to polish their Russian accents. The film was held back for doctoring after disappointing preview screenings, but you have to wonder why: As high-concept star vehicles for overexposed nonactresses go, this is about as good -- and as bad -- as it gets. leave a comment
