Eric Binford (Dennis Christopher), a lonely nerd who lives with his domineering aunt, retreats from his miserable existence into the wonderful world of movies--spending all his time in his bedroom, obsessively studying everything from B westerns to classic horror films. While on one of his rare jaunts outdoors, Eric meets and falls in love with a Marilyn Monroe look-alike (Linda Kerridge) and attempts to romance her. A combination of events--including being stood up by his love--cause Eric to finally crack, however, and he begins dressing up like his favorite movie heroes and killing people. Emulating such characters as Richard Widmark's Tommy Udo in KISS OF DEATH, William Boyd as Hopalong Cassidy, Boris Karloff in THE MUMMY, and Bela Lugosi as DRACULA, Eric finally gets it in a WHITE HEAT-style conclusion atop Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Boasting an inventive concept, with a nicely nuanced performance from BREAKING AWAY's Christopher, FADE TO BLACK is a creepy little film that, perhaps, doesn't go quite far enough. While director Vernon Zimmerman does convey Eric's pathetic obsessions, the film seems a bit too tame and appears to hold back just when it should play like an even more demented version of TAXI DRIVER. It's certainly not a bad film--in fact, it can be quite fun--but it fails to grip the gut as it should and, therefore, can be considered somewhat disappointing. leave a comment
