A mediocre musical remake of a fine dramatic play ("Brother Rat") with wishy-washy direction by Roy Del Ruth and a pale script, ABOUT FACE features Gordon MacRae, Eddie Bracken, and Dick Wesson as cadets struggling through their final moments at the Southern Military Institute. They also attempt to out-think their tough professor (Cliff Ferre) and, in one case, keep a secret wife under wraps. MacRae demonstrates his rich voice and Bracken shows some of the comedic talent he displayed under director Preston Sturges in MIRACLE AT MORGAN'S CREEK, but the picture suffers from a lack of focus. Songs include "There's No Other Girl for Me," "Spring Has Sprung," "Tar Heels," "Reveille," "If Someone Had Told Me," "I'm Nobody" (delivered with gusto by Grey playing an oppressed underclassman), "S.M.I. March," "They Haven't Lost a Father Yet," and "Wooden Indian." A pleasant but plodding programmer that illustrates Jack Warner's practice of making and remaking (sometimes endlessly) earlier Warner Bros.' properties that had reaped box-office bonanzas in the past. leave a comment
