Cortez is a tough Walter Winchell-esque journalist who keeps an eye out for dirt, and revels in writing about it. The portrait of journalism that Seiter offers is generally realistic, but the director also romanticizes matters a little. After Cortez receives his due, old flame Twelvetrees
is there to ease his fall. Pitts has a comic, but uninspired, role as the
Gazette telephone operator.
