Eyes Of Laura Mars

1978, Movie, R, 104 mins

Highly polished, brutally manipulative suspense picture that mines the familiar Hitchcockian themes of voyeurism and misogynistic violence. The title character (Faye Dunaway) is a trendy Manhattan photographer who develops a disturbing psychic ability to visualize gruesome murders before they occur. A police lieutenant (Tommy Lee Jones) takes the case, offering support to Laura, whose friends and models are rapidly falling victim while Jones tries to unravel the threads of the mystery. Parts of the film are nasty enough to grip the audience, but a large portion is muddled and sometimes laughably pretentious. The film is coscripted by John Carpenter from his 1974 story, but the result is disappointing in comparison to Carpenter's other efforts (ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, HALLOWEEN, PRINCE OF DARKNESS). Not surprisingly, Carpenter expressed dissatisfaction with the film. The photographs used throughout are by Rebecca Blake and Helmut Newton, who achieved great notoriety during the 1970s for using sadomasochistic fantasies to sell high fashion.. Produced by Barbra Streisand's ex, Jon Peters, which accounts for the inclusion of her song "Prisoner." leave a comment
