A B-thriller with a standard story line, this film nonetheless features a novel gimmick: its hero, Arnold, plays a blind, middle-aged private detective led by a seeing-eye dog. Arnold is sought out by an old friend, Harding, whose young stepdaughter (Reed) is involved with an older, self-centered actor (Emery). There is no love lost between Harding and Reed, at least in part because Emery and Harding were lovers at one time. When Reed later discovers the actor murdered in his apartment--and Harding standing nearby--she automatically holds her stepmother responsible for the crime. A subplot involving a group of Nazi agents' search for a WW II-related secret formula unfolds as Arnold sets out to solve Emery's murder. Highlights of the film include the return of Harding to the screen after a five-year absence. Reed, who would later become known for her portrayal of a sugary sweet TV mom, is convincing as the willful, precocious stepdaughter. leave a comment
