When the crop fails for the third straight year, wealthy vineyard owner Niven agrees to an ancient ritual wherein his life will be sacrificed to assure a good harvest in the future. Kerr, his wife, is understandably less than enthusiastic, but by the time she can put a stop to it, it's too late. At picture's end, heir Duncan and local priest Pleasence exchange a knowing glance, suggesting that the youthful marquis has also accepted his family's heritage--and the fate that awaits him. It's all treated very seriously, which may be the major flaw here. In production for years, the movie was set back when Kim Novak was injured and replaced by Kerr, necessitating retakes of a number of scenes. Scripting was initially done by Terry Southern who was replaced by the credited writers. Director Thompson's predecessors were Michael Anderson, Sidney J. Furie, and Arthur Hiller. leave a comment
