How does one make a film about rape, showing the full horror of the situation, without exploiting the on-screen victim? In EXTREMITIES, director Young seeks to answer this question, but the results are not entirely successful. Fawcett stops for an ice-cream cone on her way home one night and is assaulted by a stranger (James Russo) wearing a ski mask. She manages to escape, but when she goes to the police she is shocked to learn that because she cannot identify her masked attacker and because there were no witnesses, little can be done. The unknown assailant has her wallet, however, and Fawcett is terrified that he will come to her home. Fawcett and Russo deliver powerful performances as they give and receive intense physical and mental abuse with uncompromising realism. Young's direction of the attempted rape makes frighteningly effective use of the subjective camera, often showing action through the eyes of both victim and attacker. Originally an off-Broadway play, EXTREMITIES projects the powerful rancor of the play, but the film also retains some deadening theatricality that doesn't work on screen. leave a comment
