With its all-star cast of B-movie veterans and sporty martial arts sequences, this above-average action picture is comfort food for its target audience. Stalwart CIA hero John Kennedy Brascoe (Dan Anderson) should have known better than to trust his venal partner, Cody (Olivier Gruner). Cody and Brascoe corner a traitor during a weapons software transaction; the traitor is holding a child hostage, and when the boy dies during the inevitable shoot-out, Cody covers his own culpability by pinning the blame on Brascoe. Brascoe is forced to retire and hitches his star to a new computer firm, focusing the bulk of his energy on caring for his critically ill son, Jason (Colton James). Jason has leukemia, and his only hope is an experimental program that will cost five million dollars to fund. The desperate Brascoe gets a tip from reporter Samantha Scott (Odile Corso) that financier Baker (Michale Ironside) acquired his fortune through questionable methods. When Baker callously gives Brascoe the cold shoulder, Brascoe dusts off his CIA experience and uses his partner's computer knowledge to transform Baker into an unwitting philanthropist. Brascoe borrows seed money from a crooked US senator and successfully overrides the security system at Baker's heavily guarded mansion. Brascoe uses the millions he steals from Baker to finance the pediatric leukemia study for his son and several other children. When Brascoe's helpmates start turning up dead, Brascoe immediately suspects that the miserly Baker has initiated a vendetta, though the culprit could also be the vindictive Cody. Brascoe finally finds himself trapped at the oncology ward of his son's hospital, defending the boy from a series of assaults. The gimmicl that drives this fast-paced caper flick/weekend warrior adventure is the use of CIA strategies in a non-military situation. Although Anderson is a personable enough hero, he lacks the charisma that would establish him as a martial arts icon. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
