Advertising writer Raymond is in love with Davis and wants to marry her. She, however, is a liberated woman who thinks that living together is a superior arrangement. The two begin a prosperous ad agency that falters after a couple of years. He begins to pay close attention to client Strozzi and Davis becomes jealous. She begins an affair with Owsley. Caught in a compromising position by Raymond, Davis professes her innocence and confesses that she was only trying to make him jealous. Reconciled, the two decide that marriage is the way to go. Lame little melodrama notable chiefly for being the first film to have Bette Davis' name above the title. EX-LADY is a remake of the Barbara Stanwyck vehicle--her sixth film--ILLICIT (1931). It seems remarkable that two up-and-coming young actresses such as Davis and Stanwyck should have starred in essentially the same story with so little time elapsing between releases. This film was one of the final ones made by Warner Bros. under the aegis of then-production chief Darryl F. Zanuck. That same year, Zanuck resigned to form his own production company, 20th Century Pictures--which, the following year, merged with Fox to become 20th Century-Fox. leave a comment
