SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL is the third film to costar Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder (SILVER STREAK and STIR CRAZY preceded it). Wilder plays Dave, the deaf owner of a newsstand, who hires Wally (Pryor), a blind gambler, to work for him. Wally's bookie comes to the newsstand to collect a debt and is shot by a mysterious woman, Eve (Joan Severance), but, before dying, he drops a priceless coin into Dave's cigar box till. Wally and Dave are mistaken for the killers and arrested. Hoping to get their hands on the coin, which has since found its way into Wally's pocket, Eve and her English partner (Kevin Spacey) pose as lawyers and offer to post bail for Dave and Wally. A series of coincidences and plot twists (including the kidnaping of Wally's sister, and the stealing and restealing of the coin) comes to a head at the mansion of tyrannical crime lord Sutherland (Anthony Zerbe). Lowbrow comedy at its worst, SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL is full of cheap disability jokes, stupid car chases, and boring shootouts, and none of it is very entertaining. Wilder and Pryor struggle mightily to pull it off, but the comic duo are capable of much more than this gimmick-filled rubbish allows. However, Joan Severance is stunning as the beautiful, mysterious villainess, and steals every scene she's in. leave a comment
