Garland is the baby of a family of theater performers, and the whole family is down on its luck. Garland and her older sister, Carver, get kicked out of boarding school because Judy likes to sing Mendelssohn to a swing beat. At home, Judy does one of those let's-put-on-a-show routines (something that would be over-used in later films) and gets the family back on their feet. Brice plays the maid, but she doesn't get enough screen time to show her talents. Songs include, "Swing, Mr. Mendelssohn, Swing," "The One I Love," "Down on Melody Farm," "The Show Must Go On," "I Wanna Swing," "Never Was There Such a Perfect Day" (Gus Kahn, Bronislau Kaper, Walter Jurmann), "Quainty Dainty Me," "Why?
