Garland is the baby of a family of theater performers, and the whole family is down on its luck. Garland and her older sister, Carver, get kicked out of boarding school because Judy likes to sing Mendelssohn to a swing beat. At home, Judy does one of those let's-put-on-a-show routines (something that would be over-used in later films) and gets the family back on their feet. Brice plays the maid, but she doesn't get enough screen time to show her talents.
