Every Night At Eight: Review

Amiable musical comedy that packs a lot of story and music into just 80 minutes. The Swanee sisters (Faye, Langford and an unusually-well-dressed Kelly) work at Huxley's Mint Julep Co. and have just impressed all the employees with their act at the company show. They decide to pursue their career and use their boss' Dictaphone machine to make a recording. Caught in the act, they are summarily dismissed from the company, then locked out of their rooms when they can't pay the rent. A billboard on the side of a truck is a bolt from the blue: it advertises an amateur radio show (not unlike Major Bowes' Original Amateur Hour). They go on the show and are in the midst of their song when Langford faints from hunger. The contest is won by Raft, who leads a band. He feels sorry for the trio and invites them to join his orchestra. They have an engagement at a nightclub and do well enough, but it's still not the Big Time. Eventually, they are hired to do a show for the same company that fired them, and they are thrust into another world. The girls dress up in fine furs, gowns and baubles, but they are so busy working for Raft that they feel their lives are not their own. By this time, Langford and Raft are goony about each other but that doesn't stop the trio from attending an elegant yacht party with a bunch of society types. Soon enough, the girls realize that they are out of their league, and they rush back to the radio station where they join in with Raft for the show. The movie ends with Langford and Raft goo-goo-eyeing each other. The best comedy sequence is the satire on the amateur show with some funny stuff by Gill doing bird calls to opera. Gorgeous costumes and some popular songs highlight the proceedings. Songs include: "I Feel a Song Comin' On" (George Oppenheimer, Dorothy Fields, Jimmy McHugh), "Take It Easy," "Speaking Confidentially," "I'm in the Mood for Love," "Every Night at Eight" (Fields, McHugh), and "Then You've Never Been Blue" (Ted Fiorito, Joe Young, Sam Lewis, Frances Langford). leave a comment
