1934, Movie, NR, 83 mins

Laye is an Irish opera singer whose career rises and falls over the course of the film. Kortner is her manager, who always forbade his prima donna romance, depriving her of the happiness she might have found with Esmond. The final scene has the aging diva with the burned-out voice upstaged by a young singer. She then returns to her dressing room to listen to her old records, and dies. A tragic story competently acted and told. Alec Guinness made his film debut here as an extra. It would be 12 years before he would make another screen appearance, playing Pocket in David Lean's GREAT EXPECTATIONS. leave a comment
