It's a rare moment when the original creator of a movie has an opportunity to remake it. That was the case when John Farrow did BACK FROM ETERNITY seventeen years after he did FIVE CAME BACK. You'd think that he would have learned from his errors first time around. This time, with more money and more time, he made a much duller picture. The acting is somewhat better than in the first film, but 22 minutes were added and the fat is evident. The story is, by now, familiar. A plane crashes in South American head-hunting territory. The group includes the tough pilot (Ryan), the busty hooker on her way to a resort to pick up some fast money (Ekberg), killer Steiger on his way to his execution, and rich socialite Kirk and her quivering boy friend, Barry. Jesse White is a gangster, Prud'Homme and Bondi are the senior couple, etc. The passenger list seems to have someone in every age and financial bracket. They didn't miss a trick. While the headhunters close in, we find that after the planeis repaired, it will only accommodate five of the crowd that landed. Steiger had already made ON THE WATERFRONT; OKLAHOMA; and THE HARDER THEY FALL and was still only 31 when this movie was done. Ekberg was only 25 and still technically a starlet. Farrow, father of Mia among others, keeps the activity as rapid as he can, but the basic decision to remake a movie that wasn't all that terrific in the first place was an error. Waxman did a fine score that was more exciting than the footage. leave a comment
