Rutting suffers mightily in this weepy melodrama after she discovers that her fiance is that father of her best friend's child. She moves to the country and finds a new love, schoolmaster Holm, but local gossip forces her to flee. Later, she returns to Holm, who has been badly burned while
saving a drunk from a fire. They marry, and are briefly happy, but then Ruetting succumbs to diphtheria while caring for a friend's stricken child. She and Holm vow their title eternal love as this forgotten import fades out. Based on a novel by Felicitas Rose, the story was filmed once before in
1933. (In German; English subtitles.)
