This inventively conceived martial arts picture deserves credit for embedding a contemporary story within more historical flashbacks than any movie since INTOLERANCE (1916). It's deja-vu all over again when two oft-reincarnated criminals face off in 2002. Grey (D. Al'Deighmian Jackson) is principle henchman to his mentor, Al Louis (Eric V. Caroll), and follow orders out of gratitude to the older man. But while Grey is busy fighting ninjas, Al's second-in-command, Michael Woods (Krishan B. Sharma), is dallying with Al's wife, Illiana (Solange Suazo), and scheming to usurp his authority. When Michael winds up in Al's hot seat, Illiana lies and claims that Grey is actually her lover. With Grey discredited, Michael assassinates his boss and pins that on Grey as well. As he eludes the capos of other crime families, who buy the story that Grey is a murderous traitor, Grey recalls several past incarnations. In China, 1440, Grey battled a robber band; on an island in the Atlantic Ocean in 1611, Grey crossed swords with pirates. Each of Grey's past lives ended in armed combat that brought no final resolution. By the time Michael has hired the Moongoose (Russell Prine) to wipe out Grey, he's also decided that Illiana is a liability. Grey goes on the lam with Illiana and recollects still more violent lives, one in 1850 Wyoming and another in ancient Egypt. It turns out that paid assassin Mongoose is the same opponent Grey has tangled with throughout history. Will Grey's upcoming duel with Mongoose be the ultimate clash that puts both souls to rest? Marred by substandard cinematography and a script that ultimately fails to link up the various layers of the complicated story, this imaginative kung fu spectacle is nevertheless surprisingly entertaining. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
