Escape

Du Maurier (father of novelist Daphne) is a WW I hero who accidentally kills a reprehensible detective during a brawl over a street girl. Sentenced to five years of hard labor, he endures as long as he humanly can and then escapes. Several women shelter him and help him avoid capture, but finally he surrenders while hiding in a church, rather than have the pastor lie about his presence. RKO'S first attempt at overseas production was this John Galsworthy character study of a man driven outside the law, and the kindly people who help him.
