1953, Movie, NR, 98 mins

Holden's first movie at MGM features him as a captain in the Union Army who watches over a stockade in Arizona filled with Confederate rebels. He brings escaped prisoner Lupton back to the prison with a noose around his neck to show any of the others that the same fate awaits them if they dare attempt to flee. His commanding officer, Reid, takes Holden to task, and his compatriots will have nothing to do with him as a result of his cruelty. Holden feels that discipline must be maintained, and he defends his behavior. Parker arrives at the fort to attend the wedding of Reid's daughter, Bergen, who is to marry army officer Anderson. She is actually a southern agent whose job is to aid the rebels and their leader, Forsythe, in an escape. She begins to seduce Holden and learns that he is not as bad as she thought. She departs with the escaping rebels, but Holden soon pursues and eventually catches up with them. He engages in a hand-to-hand battle with Forsythe who is also in love with Parker. Holden leads the captured men back to the fort, but they are waylaid by hostile Indians. It's an old story, but Sturges' direction is excellent. Michael Pate, a well-known actor in this kind of movie, co-authored the story. A couple of songs serve as melodic counterpoint to the near nonstop action. leave a comment
