Although American journalist Sam Conway (Cyril O'Reilly) is in San Pedro, a third world Latin American country, to cover the upcoming visit of the Pope, he stumbles across an even better story: insurrection by the peasantry. Because he's counting on favorable coverage of the pontiff's visit to generate an economic windfall, President Mendoza (F. Murray Abraham) swiftly orders Colonel Alvarez (Albert Isola) to round up guerrilla leader Marcos (Carlos Carrasco) and his freedom fighters. Mendoza won't let anything stand in his way, not even a predicted volcanic eruption. Meanwhile, Sam learns of Marcos's crusade for social justice from Dr. Luisa Soares (Patricia Velasquez), a physician who sympathizes with the peasants' plight. Accepting Sam into his inner circle, Marcos initiates a plan to interrupt the Pope's address with a plea for global intervention. When Alvarez intercepts Marcos's vanguard, however, Sam must find another way to photograph the rebel leader's plight and smuggle the film out of the country. And things only get worse, for oppressors and oppressed alike, when the lava starts flowing. Although this action pic isn't a natural catastrophe, it does bear some resemblance to an artistic one. While it's possible to commend the huckster filmmakers for assembling a narrative around the existing footage of volcanic eruptions, this is one of those shlocky productions in which even the bona fide Hispanic actors seem to be speaking with fake accents. On the plus side, one doesn't come across too many Banana Republic opuses or disaster flicks these days, so at least action buffs will kill two genres with one stone. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
