This film is made up of two segments on WW II. The first, "Scherzo Alla Pollaca," is about a married Pole who decides to be a black marketeer when the Nazis invade. He accidentally gets involved in the Polish underground and becomes dedicated to the cause. The second segment, "Ostinato
Lugubre," is about Polish inmates in a Nazi concentration camp whose spirits are kept high because they believe one Pole has escaped from the camp. Director Munk was a leader of the highly talented group of directors who emerged as the "Polish film school" in the 1950s. He was killed in a car
crash in 1961.
