A trio of stories by writer Grace Paley are adapted for the screen in this only partially successful film. In the first, and strongest, of the segments, Ellen Barkin is a young mother whose husband walks out on her. Ron McLarty, an old friend of hers, offers Barkin romance, but she turns him down. McLarty is hardly deterred, though. The second story follows Lynn Milgrim, a divorced Jewish mother of two, as she visits her religious father. During the visit she comes to realize the mundane life she leads. The final piece deals with Maria Tucci, a divorced but financially well off social worker. While going to visit her father in the hospital she is picked up by Kevin Bacon, a young cab driver and would-be musician who falls for the older woman. Like most segmented films, ENORMOUS CHANGES AT THE LAST MINUTE has a hard time maintaining a consistent quality. The three stars briefly meet onscreen to link the film, but, other than thematically, the different segments have no relation to one another. Barkin's story is marvelous; Milgrim's story, on the other hand, has no cohesiveness. The final story has some strong moments, but Tucci's constant sad smile is difficult to take. The film's overall strength remains in the varying abilities of the cast. leave a comment
