A wartime drama dealing with the struggles of three Europeans trying to escape persecution by the Nazis. March, a strong-willed German outspoken in his disapproval of the new regime, leaves his wife behind just as Hitler overtakes Austria. While on the run he meets a young Jewish pair--Ford and Sullavan--also seeking asylum. With falsified passports and identification papers, the trio make their way across Europe--sometimes together, sometimes splitting up. They travel through Prague, Zurich, and Geneva, each time fearing that the officials will discover their game. March learns that his wife, Dee, has been taken ill and is dying in Austria. Risking his life, he goes to see her before she passes away. Both March and Nazi von Stroheim perish in a fight; meanwhile, Ford and Sullavan find safety and romance in Paris. While lengthy at 120 minutes and somewhat repetitive in its telling of the trio's exploits, SO ENDS OUR NIGHT offers some virtuoso performances. March, as usual, is effective, as is Dee in her role as his wife. Von Stroheim fills the screen with his foreboding "man you love to hate" image. Receiving the most favorable raves, however, were a 24-year-old baby-faced Ford and Sullavan (on loan for a one-picture deal from Universal), whose on-screen romance proved to be thoroughly convincing and touching. The film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Score. leave a comment
