Brodsky, the bell-ringer and grave-digger for a church, impersonates a priest until an atheist schoolmaster and a communist discover his true identity. They try to unmask him by fixing him up with a whore. But Brodsky finds out about the plot and sets the barn, where the tryst was to be held, on fire, killing a poor hobo who had been hiding inside.
