Brodsky, the bell-ringer and grave-digger for a church, impersonates a priest until an atheist schoolmaster and a communist discover his true identity. They try to unmask him by fixing him up with a whore. But Brodsky finds out about the plot and sets the barn, where the tryst was to be
held, on fire, killing a poor hobo who had been hiding inside. Now the cops are after him, but he is killed when he falls off the church roof. Director Schorm is known as the "spiritual authority" of the internationally acclaimed Czech New Wave and is acknowledged to be its leading director.
Brejchova is Czechoslovakia's most popular and best-known screen actress.
