Four screenwriters, including Gregory Nava and Anna Thomas--the husband-and-wife team behind EL NORTE and A TIME OF DESTINY--fail to do justice to Kate Chopin's landmark feminist novel
The Awakening in this disappointing screen adaptation. Set in turn-of-the-century New Orleans, it depicts
the frustration a married woman faces in trying to become her own person. Unfortunately, the filmmakers took considerably more care with the costumes and set design than they did with presenting Chopin's story in an engaging manner.
