In this surprisingly sophisticated riff on animated fairy-tale movie cliches, a chirpy animated princess (winsomely played by Amy Adams) is banished to the real world of New York City, where there are no happily ever-afters. Patrick Dempsey stars as a divorced divorce lawyer who becomes her guardian, and Susan Sarandon puts in a memorable appearance as the requisite evil queen/wicked stepmother. Disney's Enchanted repeated this weekend as box-office champ, adding $17 million to its coffers. This Christmas placed second with $8.4 mil. Rounding out the top five were Beowulf (with $7.9 million), Jessica Alba and Anakin Skywalker's Awake (opening with $6 mil) and Hitman ($5.8 mil). In limited release, both The Savages ($38,280 per screen, versus Awake's $3,002) and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly ($25,100 per screen) opened strongly. read more
Enchanted Bewitches the Holiday Box Office | Today's News: Our Take | 11/25/2007
Disney's Enchanted topped the box office with a $35.3-million three-day haul, and has taken in $50.5 mil since Wednesday — the second-best five-day Thanksgiving opening ever (behind Toy Story 2's $80.1 mil). This Christmas placed second with $18.6 mil.Rounding out the top five were Beowulf ($16.2 million for the three-day weekend), the video-game adaptation Hitman ($13 mil in its debut) and Bee Movie ($12 mil).
