A change of pace from Steven Spielberg: A film about innocence lost, based on J.G. Ballard's quasi-autobiographical WWII novel. Christian Bale stars as a pampered nine-year-old English schoolboy who has lived his entire life in Shanghai with his aristocratic parents. When the Japanese conquer the city, he's separated from his family and falls in with an opportunisitic merchant seaman (John Malkovich) who teaches him how to survive in a world that's falling to pieces.
