Grim and hardscrabble as a hobo's life, this film documents Marvin and Carradine in their bumming travels, particularly their attempt to ride the one freight train controlled by the meanest cop on the rails, Borgnine. Marvin is superb as the No. 1 hobo of all time, the most ingenious railrider in the history of tramping. Young drifter Carradine intends to become more famous than the man he most admires, Marvin, so he, too, boards the Borgnine train as it chugs northward, vying for the title of Emperor of the North Pole by surviving Borgnine's sadistic attacks. Borgnine beats both Marvin and Carradine mercilessly with iron rods, chains, and fists in his attempt to remove them from his train. But in the end it is Marvin who survives, with Carradine thrown from the train. Borgnine and Marvin battle to the death in an obsessive, unrealistic finale that proves Marvin is, indeed, "king of the hoboes." Aldrich's direction is tight and faster than the freight train running through his frames, and Biroc's camera captures breathtaking scenery, but the story is about as probable as an honest election in Chicago. Well pictured are the vast hobo camps that dotted the rural landscape of America during the Depression-torn time of the early 1930s. The film was shot on location in Oregon and along the rails of the Oregon, Pacific & Eastern Railway. leave a comment
