One of the classics of soft-core erotic cinema, EMMANUELLE stars Sylvia Kristel as the title creature, the pretty wife of a French ambassador in Bangkok. It's not long before Emmanuelle discovers a burning sexual passion she has heretofore repressed. With the help of an attractive young teenager, Emmanuelle is exposed (literally) to the joys of eroticism. Although the film takes itself far too seriously and engages in much of the usual naughty Victoriana, it is a relatively well-made picture that became an international hit because of its appeal to both men and women. Many sequels followed (the first being EMMANUELLE 2, released in the U.S. as EMMANUELLE--THE JOYS OF A WOMAN) with Mia Nygren taking over the lead in 1984's EMMANUELLE 4. The Kristel-Nygren EMMANUELLE series (spelled with two "m"s) should not be confused with Laura Gemser's EMANUELLE (with one "m") films. leave a comment
