El Muerto

1975, Movie, NR, 105 mins

starstarstarstar
A flat, uninteresting South American western from Hector Olivera, EL MUERTO stars Christopher Lambert lookalike Juan Jose Camero as Benjamin Otalora, a young man who flees Rio de Janeiro after knifing a man. He takes refuge in Montevideo and is befriended by Azevedo Bandeira (Francisco Rabal), a powerful and well-known smuggler who ships weapons and cattle across the Uruguayan border. Otalora proves his loyalty to Don Azevedo and is given an increasing amount of power in the smuggling operations. Soon, however, he begins working on his own, forming an alliance with Azevedo's right-hand man and even seducing his boss' mistress (Thelma Biral). Although it is based on a short story by Jorge Luis Borges, there is little (besides the subtitles) to distinguish this entry from your average horse opry. The story is screenwriting-by-numbers, the photography serviceable, the music curious and uncharacteristic, and the acting stilted. (In Spanish; English subtitles.) leave a comment
