Sly, leisurely-paced western from Howard Hawks, with a script by Leigh Brackett ensuring a few laughs. It addresses the standard Hawks themes — group loyalty, professionalism — but it's also a poignant meditation on the passing of the old and the coming of the new. John Wayne plays an aging gunfighter and Robert Mitchum a drunken sheriff; with the help of James Caan and Arthur Hunnicutt, they take on ruthless cattle baron Ed Asner.
